Sending files to a TI-84 Plus CE from a Chromebook

The regular TI Connect CE doesn’t run on a Chromebook. You still have three ways to get programs and notes onto the calculator, and each one has something it won’t do. Here’s which to use.

If you’re in a hurry Plug the calculator in and send the files from a Chrome tab that uses WebUSB. For CiNotes, that’s the Send to calculator button in step 4 of the setup guide. If Chrome can’t see the calculator, or your school blocks it, use TI Connect CE on a Windows or Mac computer once. After that the files live in Archive and you don’t need a computer again.

Your three options

OptionWhat you needWhat it won’t do
TI Connect CE App for Chrome OS (TI)The app already installed, ChromeOS 77 or newer, calculator OS 5.4.0 or newerReported to refuse protected programs, which includes most C and assembly programs. Doesn’t always send all of a group file. No bundle files. Google is retiring Chrome apps.
A WebUSB page in ChromeChrome or Edge, and a Chromebook that allows websites to use USBEach tool has its own limits (below). School Chromebooks can block USB access or the site.
TI Connect CE on Windows or MacAny Windows or Mac computer for a few minutesNothing that matters here. It’s the most reliable route.

TI’s Chrome app

TI made a TI Connect CE App for Chrome OS, which it calls a “concept application.” It can send and receive files, take screenshots and update the OS. It needs ChromeOS 77 or newer and a TI-84 Plus CE on OS 5.4.0 or newer. When you send a file you can pick RAM or Archive. Pick Archive for anything you want to keep through a RAM clear.

Don’t mix it up with the TI-84 Plus CE App for Chrome OS. That was an emulator of the calculator itself, TI has discontinued it, and it couldn’t receive files anyway.

Three limits come up again and again:

It’s on a countdown. Google is phasing out Chrome apps. Its published schedule says ChromeOS 138 (July 2025) was the last version that supports Chrome apps you install yourself. Apps a school installs keep working longer: they’re disabled by default from around January 2027, unless the school turns them back on, and all Chrome apps reach end of life in January 2028 (October 2028 on the long-term support channel). So on a personal Chromebook you may not be able to use TI’s app at all. On a school Chromebook it works only while the school keeps it installed.

Sending from a Chrome tab (WebUSB)

WebUSB lets a web page talk to a USB device after you pick it from a list the browser shows. It works in Chrome and Edge, including Chrome on a Chromebook. It doesn’t work in Firefox or Safari. Nothing gets installed.

  1. Close TI Connect CE and any other tab that might be using the calculator. Two programs can’t share it.
  2. Plug the calculator in with its USB cable, turn it on, and leave it on the home screen.
  3. Open the transfer page, choose your files, and click its connect or send button.
  4. Pick the calculator in the list Chrome shows.
  5. Wait for the transfer to finish before you unplug.

Which page to use:

None of these are made by TI. If one can’t find the calculator, try another cable port, restart Chrome, and make sure nothing else has the calculator open.

School-managed Chromebooks

Schools can turn off USB access for websites, block the Chrome Web Store, block specific sites, and turn off developer mode. Some do all four. If the calculator never shows up in Chrome’s list, or the page is blocked, that’s probably why.

Don’t try to get around your school’s settings. Send the files once from a home, library or friend’s Windows or Mac computer with TI Connect CE. Files in Archive stay on the calculator until you delete them.

Putting CiNotes on the calculator from a Chromebook

CiNotes turns your PDFs, study guides, question banks or typed notes into a searchable notes program for the TI-84 Plus CE and CE Python. How it works.

  1. Check your OS. Press 2ND + 1. On OS 5.5 or newer, do the free one-time setup first. The jailbreak guide covers every OS. On 5.5 to 5.8.4, send AsmHook2_unprot.8xp instead of AsmHook2.8xp if TI’s Chrome app refuses it. For 5.8.5, the arTIfiCE author suggests TI Connect CE or WebTILP.
  2. Make your notes at cinotes.com. The ZIP arrives by email. Download it on the Chromebook.
  3. Open the setup guide in Chrome and use the Send to calculator button in step 4. Choose the ZIP. Pick the calculator when Chrome asks.
  4. Open CiNotes. Press PRGM (choose TI-Basic if asked), pick the program named in your delivery email, and press ENTER twice.

Be aware: the CiNotes program is a protected file, the kind TI’s Chrome app is reported to refuse. Use the Send to calculator button or a Windows or Mac computer rather than TI’s Chrome app. If the button doesn’t show up, your browser or school doesn’t allow WebUSB.

Everything goes to Archive, so a RAM clear doesn’t erase your notes. After a RAM clear, open AsmHook2 from APPS once and CiNotes opens again. No computer needed.

Pasted notes up to 300 words are free. PDFs are $3 for up to 10 pages, then 10¢ a page up to page 50, then 5¢ a page. See pricing. CiNotes doesn’t run on the TI-84 Evo or on black-and-white TI-84s.

If something doesn’t work

Common questions

Can I install TI Connect CE on a Chromebook?

Not the regular version. TI Connect CE is a Windows and Mac program. TI made a separate TI Connect CE App for Chrome OS, but it is a Chrome app, and Google is retiring Chrome apps. On a Chromebook, a WebUSB page in Chrome or a borrowed Windows or Mac computer is usually the easier route.

Why won’t TI’s Chrome app send my program?

Users report that it refuses protected programs, which includes most assembly and C programs. Some tools ship an unprotected copy for this reason, such as AsmHook2_unprot.8xp. Otherwise, send the file from a WebUSB page in Chrome or from TI Connect CE on Windows or Mac.

Why does my program say “Need LibLoad” or “ERROR: Missing Library”?

The C libraries file, clibs.8xg, is a group file, and TI’s Chrome app doesn’t always send all of it. Download clibs_separately_in_zip.zip from the CE C libraries releases page, unzip it, and send every file inside.

Can I put CiNotes on my calculator from a Chromebook?

Yes, if Chrome is allowed to use USB. Open the setup guide in Chrome, go to step 4, and use the Send to calculator button (beta) to send the ZIP from your email. If the button doesn’t appear or your school blocks USB access, use TI Connect CE on a Windows or Mac computer.

My school Chromebook blocks the calculator. What now?

Don’t try to get around your school’s settings. Send the files from a home, library or friend’s computer instead. Once they’re in Archive, you don’t need the Chromebook again.
